Cindy Pfeiffer, Riannon's grandmother in Oakland, picked up the mail on the day Highlights sent notice that it had decided to publish "Me in a Dance Show." Pfeiffer said she called Riannon, who was visiting family in Texas, to tell her the good news. Through the phone line, she could hear her granddaughter running around and cheering. "I was pretty excited," Riannon recalled with a big smile. The "Me in a Dance Show" drawing was inspired by an episode of "Dancing with the Stars" on television with her Grandmother Pfeiffer, Riannon said. The third-grader said she draws a variety of subjects and really likes to draw animals, including her family's cats.

Pfeiffer said one of Riannon's drawings of flowers was printed last year in Lake Land College's summer class guide. Riannon, the daughter of Tomas Guerrero and Cindi Comerford, said she would like to put her drawing skills to work when she grow up as a clothing designer. She has already been working on the sketches. By ROB STROUD Staff Writer OAKLAND Young readers will soon find one of Riannon Guerrero's drawings in the same magazine as "Goofus and Gallant" and "The Timbertoes." Her colored-pencil drawing, "Me in a Dance Show," is slated for publication in the May issue of Highlights for Children magazine. Riannon, age 9, recently received an advance copy of the magazine, which she happily held during an interview after her class day concluded at Lake Crest School in Oakland.

Riannon said she said receives Highlights for Children by mail each month and one of her favorite sections is "Your Own Pages" This section showcases children's artwork from around the world. Having started drawing at age 5, Riannon said she decided to submit some of her works to the magazine for possible publication. "Drawing is fun, and I get to use different colors. It's really pretty at the end," Riannon said. Highlights magazine reports that its readers send the magazine more than 35,000 submissions each year.
