Harris, a 71-year-old retired police otlicer who still lives near Tupelo, says "there wasn't a bit ot ditlerence" in Presley before he Ix'came famous and alter. Presley came back to his hometown several times to visit lriends. "He never did seem like he was on a higher level than us," Harris says.

The Harrises and the Presleys were so close that Harris' mother was in the room with Gladys when the Presley twins were born, he says. Harris savs he, Preslev and another friend, Odell dark, liked to run in the woods and swim in a creek when they were chil- dren. Every fall, they'd go to the final Saturday night of the Mississippi-Alabama Fair and Dairy Show in Tupelo. One year after the Presleys had moved to Memphis, teenagers Harris and Clark were getting ready for the fair and they heard a knock. "1 went to the door and it was Elvis," Harris recalls.

"I said, 'Boy, what are you And he said, 'It's the last Saturday night of the fair isn't it? I come to go with Presley returned to Tupelo more before he became famous than after. He gave concerts at his hometown fairgrounds in 1956 and 1957. TUPEIA Miss. While the iocus on Elvis' 75th birthday Friday will be on Graceland, the international tourist attraction in Memphis that has become synonymous with the legend since his death in 1977, about hundreds of fans are expected to converge on his birthplace in northeastern Mississippi for a different, perspective on the man who reshaped popular music by blending elements of black and white, blues and blue-grass, gospel and rockabilly to become arguably its most popular figure, the King of Rock n' The 15-by-30-foot home in Tupelo, built in 1934 by Presley's father, grandfather and uncle, was on the poor side of town, and his family only stayed in the home until Presley was 212 because they couldn't afford the payments.

"We are presenting the unknown Elvis, the little bov Elvis," says Dick Guyton, director of the foundation that runs the Elvis Presley Birthplace in Tupelo, a city of 36,000 that sits 100 miles southeast of Memphis Visitors to Graceland are loaded onto vans at a visitors' center, driven to the mansion and moved through in herds with a recorded tour on individual headsets. In Tupelo only a few people at tune can walk through the wood-tramed home where Presley and his stillborn twin brother, Jesse Garon Presley, entered the world on Jan. 8, "It's just so tiny. Inconspicuous as a start, really," says 34-year-old Emma Daubert of Cameron, N.C., who recently visited with her parents, husband and daughter. The boyhood home sits on a 15-acre site that includes a museum, a gift shop, a chapel with elaborate stained-glass windows, a statue of 13-year-old Elvis and, since 2008, the Assembly of God church the Presley family attended.

When Presley was a boy, Vernon Presley had trouble keeping a job and spent time in prison. The network, contemplating disappointing ratings for lino's new prime-time show, is weighing a plan to return him to the 11:33 EST slot he held for 17 years as "Tonight Show" host, a person lamihar with the discussions said on condition of anonymity over a lack ol authority to address the issue publicly. NBC executives on Thursday discussed a scenario that would include a halt -hour Ixno show at 11:35 p.m.

EST, sending "Tonight" with Conan-O'Brien to 12:05 a.m. and Jimmy Fallon's "Late Night" to 1:05 a.m., the person said. "The Jay Ino Show," a nightly 10 p.m. talk and comedy program that debuted last tall, has drawn lackluster ratings and complaints trom NBC alliliate stations that the show has provided a weaker lead-in tor local late newscasts than past NBC series. The proposed new lineup could go into ellect after NBC concludes its Feb.

12-28 Winter Olympics coverage, the person told The Associated Press. NBC declined comment. Earlier Thursday, the network denied a report by the Web site FTV that Ix-no's prime-time venture would end when the Olympics started. A subsequent TMZ Web site report said that he would reclaim the 11:35 p.m. EST time slot he occupied through last May.

In a series of statements, the fourth-place network took pains to express support for both li'no and O'Brien. "Jay Leno is one of the most compelling entertainers in the rid today," NBC said. "As we said all along, Jay's show p-Tformed exactly as we i ated on the network. It nowever, presented some jes for our affiliates. Both ay and the show are committed to working closely with them to find ways to the performance." While this statement didn't clearly deny the Web reports that Ixno's show would te dropped, a clarification from NBC executives denied "The Show" has been canceled.

Thursday night, another NBC statement expressed the network's commitment "to keeping Conan O'Brien on NBC. He is a valued part of our late-night lineup, as he has been for more than 16 years and is one of the most respected entertainers on television." During his monologue Thursday, Leno milked some laughs from the "rumor floating around that we were canceled. I heard it coming in this morning on the radio. So far, no one has said anything to me." But if it's true, he joked, "it will give us time to do some traveling. I understand that (the) Fox (network) is beautiful this time of year." "I don't think there is any truth to the rumors," he went on, referring to his front-runner status in the ratings when BC took him off "The Tonight Show." "See, it's always been my experience that NBC only cancels you when you're in first place," Leno cracked.

"So we are fine. We are OK." O'Brien, who has attracted a smaller if younger audience than Leno did as "Tonight" host, made no mention of the scuttlebutt in his monologue. On Thursday, the rumors surrounding Leno's fate left industry analyst Shari Anne Brill mystified. "For me, the big question is what is going to happen at 10 p.m. going forward," Brill said, "because that's a critical time period to promote the late local news, and it was the affiliates' dissatisfaction with their lower audience numbers that was the catalyst for speculation on this purported move (for Leno) into late-night." Turner bid for Yellowstone bison draws protest over the last several years. "You're not being true to your commitment not to commercialize these animals," said Glenn Hockett with the Gallatin Wildlife Association. The animals are now in disease quarantine just outside Yellowstone. They are part of a 5-year program to divert some park bison from the periodic slaughter the animals face, part of efforts to prevent the spread of the disease brucellosis to cattle. Prior attempts to relocate quarantined bison failed.

Russell Miller with Turner Enterprises said keeping most of their offspring would be necessary to offset the cost of keeping 74 animals for the state for five years. tives insist he cannot take the animals without getting something in return. Turner would keep the bison five years and then return them to the state. As compensation, 1u ner would keep 90 percent of the animals' offspring, meaning he would gain an estimated 190 bison from a herd prized for its genetic purity. Some conservationists plus a group representing dozens of Indian tribes insist the ai.

mals should not be privatized or commercialized. At a Thursday public hearing over the Turner pn posal, they said the bison belong on public or tribal lands. That's what state and federal officials had promised BOZEMAN, Mont. (AP) -Ted Turner's bid to get 74 wild bison from Yellowstone National Park is drawing stiff opposition from those who say the animals are jjieing given up for private profit instead of conservation. Turner has offered to take the animals at the request of Montana's Democratic Gov.

Brian Schweitzer. Federal officials earlier warned that the animals faced slaughter if no home was found. Turner is a longtime champion of bison conservation and owns an estimated 50,000 of the animals across the West. But rising criticism over his latest plan is putting the media mogul in an awkward position. His representa Hot adult contemporary songs (Airplav monitored by NielsenBDS.) 1.
