Friends say that's how they would have imagined 17-year-old Trayvon Martin on a Sunday afternoon. Starting a fight? Possibly high on drugs and up to no good? No, friends say that description of Martin from the neighborhood crime-watch volunteer who shot and killed the unarmed black teenager doesn't match the young man they knew. "There's no way I can believe that, because he's not a confrontational kid," said Jerome Horton, who was one of Martin's former football coaches and knew him since he was about 5. "It just wouldn't happen. That's just not that kid." Martin was slain in the town of Sanford on Feb.

Doreen Watson-Beard cared for more people with dementia than she could count. The nurse was so moved by her patients that she led Alzheimer's support groups. She knew the warning signs and understood there was no cure.

But the 49-year-old never thought the disease would affect someone her age. The first clues surfaced around five years ago, when she was 44. She'd forget to pick up her grandchildren at school or plans she made with her husband. She wrote down the wrong medication dosage for a patient. "I have no idea what's going on," she remembered telling her doctor.

father, a truck driver, were active in the Miramar Optimist Club, an organization that runs sports and academic programs for young people. Tracy Martin, the teen's father, coached his son's football team. The boy was a swift athlete, according to a friend, and played a range of positions up to about age 14. After he stopped playing, he remained active in the organization, volunteering six days a week from June through November of last year to help run the team's concession stand. Martin cooked hamburgers, hot dogs and chicken wings alongside his father at the stand.

He loved talking to the kids, asking them what position they played and whether they were good, Horton recalled. He would call the mothers "Ma'am," and if they -had a stroller or an item they needed help with, Martin stepped in. "Everyone out there loved him, Horton said, Martin was tall and lanky only 140 pounds, according to the family's attorney and -his nickname was "Slimm." The teen spent a big part of his week living with his father in a one-story, peach-colored home. Neighbor Fred Collins Jr. said he would see Trayvon Martin outside every week mowing the lawn and trimming the trees.

The teen also helped Collins' son learn how to ride a bike. stereotypes Another time, she wrote down the wrong dosage of a medication on a patient's discharge plan luckily, that mistake was caught by a pharmacist. Worried someone might be harmed, she went to the doctor. She was informed she had dementia, though her doctor has not yet classified it more specifically as Alzheimer's, dementia's most common form. She was told to prepare for the future "You might need to get some things in order," Watson-Beard remembers being told.

Dr. Marc Agronin, a geriatric psychiatrist at Miami Jewish Health Systems and author of "How We Age," says symptoms of dementia in a younger patient can be glaring. But diagnosis is often complicated by the fact that it's so uncommon in younger patients and that so many other conditions could cause the symptoms. She also leaves behind her beloved cockatiel, Socrates.

Vickie loved cooking and spending time with her friends. She enjoyed summer and feeling the warmth of the sun on her skin. University energy expert Ken Medlock says. Americans have cut back on fill-ups for extended periods before. In 2008, gas spiked from $3.04 to $4.11 per gallon in seven months. It wasn't until January 2009, when the national average for gas had dropped to $1.86 that consumption increased. Drivers bought more gasoline for 23 weeks in a row.

"The spike in 2008 was a real shock to the system," Medlock says. "There's still a residual impact on people's driving behavior." There were other stretches of reduced gas use, notably two into the 1970's and one in the early 1980's. But in those cases, Americans eventually went back to driving big cars and trucks that guzzled gas. This time may be different. -Medlock thinks economic I growth will be too modest ZZ.

and gas prices will stay too high for Americans to start driving more anytime soon. Economists expect the U.S. economy to grow 2.5 percent in 2012. On Friday, President Barack Obama called the shooting a tragedy, vowed to get to the bottom of the case, and added: "When I think about this boy, I think about my own kids." Since the slaying, a portrait TO "i has emerged of Martin as a laid-back young man who loved sports, was extremely close to his father, liked to crack jokes with friends and, according to a lawyer for his family, had never been in trouble with the law. She became less socially conscious, hanging up abruptly with her boss in the middle of a conversation she thought was finished. She kept going to work at an assisted living facility near her central Florida home, while caring for her husband, who had Liver cancer. She dis-missed the symptoms as stress.

When her husband died about three years ago, the symptoms continued. She thought it was grief. But it wasn't getting better. "I thought if I ignored it long enough, it would go away," she said. Problems at work began cropping up, too.

During those 52 weeks, gasoline consumption dropped by 4.2 billion gallons, or 3 percent, according to MasterCard SpendingPulse. The decline is longer than a 51-week slide during the recession. The main reason: higher gas prices.

The national average for a gallon of gas is $3.89, the highest ever for this time of year, and experts say it could be $4.25 by late April. As a result, Americans are taking fewer trips to restaurants and shopping malls. When they take a vacation, they're staying closer to home But the decline in gas consumption is also a sign that efforts to push carmakers to produce vehicles with better gas mileage are paying off. The average new car now gets nearly 24 miles to the gallon, compared with about 20 mpg just four years ago, according to the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute "I'd expect to see lower gasoline consumption for several years to come," Rice Obituary Policy The JG-TC prints two kinds of obituaries basic and custom.
