His daughter Bernice became a minister as well. Martin Luther King Jr. led peaceful, nonviolent protests against injustice. Charles Gonzalez has served as a congressman from Texas since 1999. Before being elected to Congress, he taught fifth grade, and became a lawyer, and then a judge.

His father, Henry Gonzalez, was a congressman from Texas, 1961 to 1998. John Quincy Adams was the U.S. president from 1825-1829. Before that, he served as U.S. senator and secretary of state.
