A federal grant, worth $498,400, will be used to completely reconstruct a covered bridge over the Embarras River west of Greenupon the National Road. The additional money became necessary when work revealed that the existing bridge abutments needed to be replaced.

The funds are in addition to $1,252,000 allocated in 1997 for rebuilding the 200-foot covered timber bridge. "Our original plans included modification to existing abutments. When we got into the design work, the bridge office in Springfield told us we could not utilize these concrete substructures," said Gary Kruger, Cumberland County engineer. The county. also received $485,000 from the state for jurisdictional transfer of the roadway and two bridges.

"This insures the project will be built and we are appreciative of HOSPITAL Admitted Thursday Chester Albert, Greenup Dorothy A. Bunyard, Mattoon Mildred K. Butler, Sullivan Donna C. Hudson, Casey Inez L. Hudson, Casey Betty A.

The existing structure will be replaced with new abutments and a timber covered bridge super-structure. The existing concrete bridge was closed about two years ago because of severe scouring of the pier footings and damaged deck.

The Illinois Department of Transportation informed the village of Greenup in July 1995 the existing bridge needed to be removed. Through research, it was discovered a covered timber bridgehadexisted over the Embarras River from 1834 to 1912. Congressman Glenn Poshard, announced Friday the highway department will be the beneficiary of a Timber Bridge Construction grant to the IDOT through the Federal Highway Administration. "Promoting tourism throughout downstate Illinois is a great way to foster economic development. Projects such as this one will encourage visitors from across the country to explore this beautiful state," said Poshard in a release.
