Mattoon (111.) Journal Gazette B6 Saturday, March 15, 1997 Illini women, Duke to square off after wins 'if tit 4 --v. wm -a am i i ma mi a mjl J'ylv By The Associated Press CHAMPAIGN Alicia Sheeler had 15 points and nine rebounds as No. 16 Illinois beat Drake 79-62 on Friday night in the first round of the NCAA Midwest Regional. The victory snapped a 16-game winning streak for the Bulldogs (23-7) and kept the Illini (23-7) undefeated in Huff Hall this season. Illinois, making its first tournament appearance in a decade, will face Duke in Sunday's second round.

Illinois had led 51-31 with 17:28 to go on Sheeler's third consecutive basket. But Drake responded with a 15-4 run, including three 3-point-ers by Kiersten Miller, to make it 55-46 with 12:03 left. But the Bulldogs could get no closer, as Illinois responded with an 1 1-2 spurt for a comfortable 66-48 lead with 7:22 left. The Illini outrebounded Drake 48-34 and shot 49 percent from the floor to the Bulldogs' 35 percent. Tajua Catchings added 13 points for Illinois, and Ashley Berggren and Ann Henderson each had 11.

Lisa Brinkmeyer, who picked up her fourth foul with 4:15 left, led Drake with 15 points. Tammi Blackstone and Miller each added 13. Sullivan star, Allyson Glaze-brook, was held scoreless. Sheeler's 3-pointer with one second left in the half gave Illinois a 45-27 halftime lead. Duke 70, DePaul 56 CHAMPAIGN TyishHall scored 18 points, including the go-ahead basket with 7:47 left, as Duke beat DePaul 70-56 in the first round of the NCAA women's tournament Friday night.

Hall's bucket started a 14-2 raliy by the Blue Devils (19-10) that included 10 points by Hall and gave Duke a 53-48 lead with 6:56 to go. Hall then scored four of Duke's next eight to build a 61-51 lead with 2:42 left. DePaul (20-9) had led by as many as seven, 46-39, with 10:41 to go on a fast-break layup by Kim Williams. But the Blue Demons got in foul trouble center Amy Lundquist fouled out with 1:52 left and their interior defense fell apart. Kira Orr led Duke with 20 points and eight rebounds.

Payton Black added 1 1 for the Blue Devils, who shot just 38 percent from the floor. Lauren Rice, a freshman with ties to Mattoon, finished the game with five points. Williams led DePaul with 22 points, but committed 12 turnovers. Orr scored six points in the final three minutes of the half to give Duke a 30-28 halftime lead. Although the lead changed hands six times in the half, DePaul had led for most of the way behind the inside shooting of Lundquist, who had 10 points in the first half.

Women's Basketball Box Scores Piquard got to play in Peoria By Dean Olsen Copley News Service EAST PEORIA Inaction by the High School Board late Thursday allowed East Peoria starter Jeremy Piquard to play in Friday's Class AA Peoria Sectional boys' basketball championship game against top-ranked Manual High School. Piquard, 17, a senior standout on the llth-ranked Raiders, has been accused but not criminally charged with attending an underage drinkingparty Feb. 22 in East Peoria. A four-game suspension issued Monday by administrators at East Peoria Community High School in connection with his alleged presence at the party jeopardized his chances of playing Friday.

But Piquard appealed the suspension to the School Board, which failed to make a decision after a closed-door hearing on the matter that lasted more than two hours. A Tazewell County judge ruled Tuesday that the School Board first needed to consider Piquard's appeal before the suspension could take effect. Because the school board wasn't ready to vote in public on the appeal Thursday night, the retraining order issued by Circuit Judge Donald Courson means Piquard can continue to play, School Board Attorney DennjsTriggs told a crowd of about 30 teen-agers and adults who cheered the news. "The administration and the board are determined not to show preference for any individual said. "On the other hand, they are determined that they will not make a decision until such time as they feel they have all of the information, particularly in something with uncertainties and complexities." Triggs said board members wouldn't comment on the situation.

Five student-athletes already have begun to serve or already have served athletic suspensions for either attending the party or drinking beer at the party. Among those students were basketball players Anthony Burgett, 18, a senior starter who was suspended for the season, and Bryan Timber-lake, 16, a junior reserve guard who already has served a two-game suspension. Four others student-athletes separate from Piquard could face similar suspensions, District 309 Assistant Superintendent Joseph Kerr said. One student-athlete besides Piquard appealed a suspension to the board, but the board upheld the suspension in that case, Kerr said. Triggs said, "This investigation is not finished," but he said he didn't know when the board would meet again on the subject.

Pippen said the Knicks were inconsistent and incapable of matching the Bulls' intensity, so they would never be as good as them Pippen then pointed to the Knicks' loss to lowly Dallas this week. It came back to haunt him Friday. "It's pretty much the same thing," Pippen said after the Bulls lost for only the ninth time this season. "It's not embarrassing to lose to them, but it's embarrassing the way we played against them." Making the situation even more embarrassing was having McDaniel step up big, scoring nine of his 11 points in the final 5:51.

Michael Jordan shot an airball late in the fourth quarter when the Bulls had a chance to tie, and Xavier McDaniel hit four free throws in the final 16 seconds as the New Jersey Nets stunned Chicago 99-98. "The last shot wasn't my favorite," Jordan said. "I thought I could create a foul but at the last moment, I took the fadeaway.

It was a dumb shot." The airball was an exception for Jordan, who was 16-of-34 from the field and scored 36 points. "He's human you know," McDaniel said of Jordan's missed fadeaway jumper from 15 feet that would have tied the game at 97 with six seconds left. "You don't expect that from Black Jesus. But sometimes it happens." The win was the Nets' first over a Jordan-led Bulls' team since 1991, a string of 16 games. New ft- Halftime Illinois 45, Drake 27.
