NOVEMBER 26. 10AM-7PM I ac Tlmo Fnr til Thanksgiving: for things that By REV. D. KETNER JR. First Church of Nazarene Families are planning for their annual Thanksgiving Feast with turkey and trimmings.

Will something be missing? There can be if we only think of ourselves and the abundance of food for our own feasting. Why is Thanksgiving so important? Unless we are thankful, we're not emotionally healthy. Or, to put it in other words, we're out of touch with reality. For all of us owe so much of what we are and enjoy to God and other people. God's open hand of blessing is available to all of us.

"The Lord is faithful to all of his promises and loving toward all he has made. The eyes of all look to you, and you give them their food at the proper time. You open your hand and satisfy the desires of every living thing." Psalm 145:13,15,16. Also, there are many people to whom we owe thanks and to whom we should express it. Yes, something is missing at Thanksgiving unless we have gratitude for the things that make a life.

We all know money and material things are important and to some degree essential. Biblical teachings never said money and material things are Unimportant, although we sometimes infer that from Jesus' teachings. What the Bible does say is that in comparison to spiritual realities, material things are of considerable less value. One materialist declared "That money isn't everything but it sure beats whatever is in second place!" Jesus, who was spiritually oriented, would have responded, "Spir itualrealitiesinourrelationships to God and to people, aren't everything there is in life, but they are a million miles ahead of material things!" Our problem today isn't simply our interest in material things, but our lack of appreciation for spiritual realities that give us relationships to God and to people. If man's life doesn't consist in an abundance of possessions, then in what does it consist? And when we discover the real essence of life, let us, during this Thanksgiving season, be grateful for the things that make a life.

Concepts in psychiatry postulate man's mental health to center in the fulfillment of two basic human needs, the need to both love and to be loved, and the need to feel worthwhile to ourselves and to others. Turkey and trimmings are not enough. We believe our gratefulness to God for all of his blessings and benefits will enable us to be thankful for other Church of Christ earns service award COLUMBIA, Mo.
