But his favorite memory was when Western Illinois was beating the Panthers so bad Fisher was allowed to leave the line and play fullback as he had for coach Walter Elmore's Eastern State High School team as a "I turned out about four or five yards a crack whether they liked it or not," Fisher said of the game against Western. As a senior Vince was a starting noseguard and co-captain for the 1986 Hoosiers' Ail-American Bowl team. The older Fisher was also a three-sport star earning 11 letters at Eastern. He received all-Illinois Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors two years in football, was the IIAC heavyweight wrestling champion in 1954 and '55 and the league shot put champ in track in 1955.

Still father and son didn't always see eye to eye when it came to football. "I wanted him to do things my way and he kept telling me he couldn't do that," the plder Fisher said. "My style was completely different from his. His style was more controlled and mine was more aggressive and wreckless. In my day I just went out hunting for where I could find a ball carrier.

I guess they're a lot more disciplined now and he has to do that. I think it would be boring play that way." He sees other changes in football today. "It's changed over from my day when it was a defensive end's free day over an offensive tackle, because then an offensive player had to practically tie his hands under his shirt," Fisher you can almost do anything except hang on to a leg for deaf life. They protect the quarterback now- whereas one time if you touched someone (as a blocker), you were holding. So it's gone from, a defensive game to an offensive game." IP ER BB SO Mackovic shrugs off OSU crowd CHAMPAIGN (AP) Illinois Coach John Mackovic, preparing for his first Big Ten Conference game, said Tuesday he is not even thinking about Ohio State fans or the Buckeye's stadium. "We can't do anything about the weather, the stadium or the crowd," said Mackovic of Saturday's 12:30 p.m. CDT game. "We have to meet them offensively and defensively, and the key is preparation. "The progress has been good," said Mackovic, whose Illini improved their record to T-2 with a 35-24 victory over Utah on Sept.

17. "We had a lot of work to do after that first game." Illinois dropped its opener to Washington State 44-7, then lost 21-16 to Arizona State. Mackovic said the Illini will have their hands full with OSU, noting that the Buckeyes rallied with 16 unanswered points in the last four 'minutes Saturday to edge Louisiana State 36-33. "We anticipate that Ohio State will play the best game they'll play" against Illinois on Saturday, said Mackovic. "We have to be ready for that." OSU Coach John Cooper said that LSU victory helped the confidence of his Buckeyes, who were crushed by Pittsburgh 42-10 a week earlier.

"If we can beat LSU, we can beat anybody if we play like that," said Cooper. One key in the game will be the play of Buckeye quarterback Greg Frey, who was named Midwest Player of the Week on offense by the Associated Press. The 6-foot-2, 185-pound junior completed 24 of 37 passes for 281 yards, including the game-winning 20-yard TD pass to Bobby Olive with 38 seconds left in the LSU game. Cooper said his offensive line must protect Frey if he is to be successful against Illinois. Some of the coaches said in their weekly telephone interviews Tuesday that the poor non-conference record indicates there would be a closer, wide-open race for Big Ten honors. But others said it is a reflection of parity in college football throughout the country. "It is all relevant," said Iowa's Hayden Fry. "It indicates a tighter, tougher and more balanced race because you don't have a truly outstanding team." But Fry also took the "so-called experts" to task for the "so-called upsets" in both the college and pro ranks. "Those experts in the smoke-filled rooms are not as smart as they think they are." John Cooper, whose Ohio State Buckeyes upset Louisiana State 36-33 last Saturday with a tremendous comeback, said, "The Big Ten race will be wide open.

Everyone will have a chance." Cooper said he has watched some of the teams on television and named Michigan, Iowa and Indiana as being solid contenders. Bo Schembechler of Michigan said the race "appears it will be the way everyone figured. Half a dozen teams have a shot at. Everyone who was a contender before the season started is still a contender." But Schembechler said he didn't think the conference itself is as down as some people claim. "I don't think it is down anymore than the other conferences," said jSchembechler.

"Parity is the name of the game. There are still five or six excellent teams in the league." JDeJesus pitched to 5 batters In the 0th. "If I was to bet the farm, I'd bet on Michigan," said "There are, from a pure coaching standpoint, a lot of positive things goingon." Morton opens the Big Ten season against Michigan at Madison.

Iowa will be at Michigan State, Indiana at Northwestern, Illinois at Ohio State and Minnesota at Purdue. The Iowa-Michigan State game pits two contenders in a series that has been decided by close games in recent years. "In three of the last five games in the series, each game has been decided on the last play," said Michigan State's George Perles. "The winner of this game will be in good shape," said Perles when asked about the conference race. "It's a very Important game.

Once we get through this week, five teams will be in good shape and five teams will be in bad shape." Illinois' John Mackovic, preparing for his first Big Ten game, said, "We were picked in the second, five, so I hope the race is tight. "Iowa and Michigan State are a couple of powerhouses. One will be, in the lead, the other one out of the, lead. Illinois and Ohio State will be, no different," he said. "If we hope to be in the thick of, the Big Ten race, we have to go to Ohio State and beat them," TORONTO B08TON abrhbl abrhbl Fernndi ss0 3 2 1 Boggs 3b 9143 Gruber 3b 4 4 2 2 Barrett 2b 4 1 1 1 Mllnka dh 3 2 3 3 SOwen ph 10 0 0 Fielder dh 2 00 0 OwEvns rl 9 1 1 2 GBell It 9122Greenwl II 9010 Whllt 9 2 3 0 Burka cl 4 0 00 McQrlfl lb 00 0 Rice dh 3 3 2 1 Barfleld rl 9 0 0 0 JoRoed aa 4 0 0 0 Oucey cl 4 210 Parrish lb 4 1 2 2 Llrlano 2b 914 0 Gedman 3 2 1 0 Romlne ph 1 0 0 0 Cerone 0 0 0 0 Totals 44 19 17 14 Tolsls 30 0 12 0 Toronto 430 120 030-19 Boston 010 020 420-0 Game Winning RBI GBell (17).
