The Green Wave gave coach Dave Markwell's Eagles a 12-5 lesson Monday at Grimes Field. "We look at playing larger, schools like Mattoon, Charleston, Salem and Mt. Vernon as like a high school team playing a pro team it's a learning experience for us," Markwell said afterwards. "We know the baseball reouta-tlons of Mattoon and Charleston and we're happy to be on their schedules," he added. Mattoon coach Bob Wiman, overhearing Markwell's comments, said, "I don't think you learned much today we didn't play very well.

"I thought we played awfully ragged. We were as dead today as we were sharp Saturday (a Big 12 Conference doubleheader sweep at Springfield). "I'm sure we experienced a little bit of a letdown today after Saturday," he added. "I guess I expected a little bit of a letdown and I tried to avoid it by playing several kids, but it didn't seem to help." Mattoon constructed a 7-0 lead in the early going and bad little trouble maintaining an upper hand. However, the Eagles did trim the Wave's lead to 7-4 with three runs in the fourth and one in the fifth.

Then, Mattoon pushed the Eagles into a forced landing with five runs in the bottom of the fifth to -construct a 12-4 advantage. The Wave outhit Beecher City 10-9 with Doug Thompson and Darin Scott each going 2-for-3 and scoring twice apiece to lead the way. Both senior standouts have been swining a hot bat of late. Mark Stremming picked up the pitching win with four strong innings of relief. The junior righthander entered in the fourth with runners in scoring position, no outs and three runs already in and proceeded to set the Eagles down in 1-2-3 order. He wound up allowing four hits and two runs the remaining way. "He got the job done," Wiman said of Stremming's performance. "He wasn't suppose to pitch until Thursday (at home against Stew-Stras)." Beecher City forced Wiman's hand by sending Wave starter Dave Snapp to the sidelines in the fourth.

The Eagles had their first five runners of the inning reach base, to runs in the top of the eighth for the victory. Rush Record, with one inning of relief help from Ken Gagnon, gained the pitching victory (2-0). He fanned eight batters while 'allowing seven hits. Robert Dort had three hits and two RBIs for Mattoon. Jeff Rutledge had two hits and as many RBIs.

Teammate Gary Voudrie placed second in both hurdle events the 110-meter high hurdles and the 300-meter lows. Ken Anderson gained a run-nerup finish in the triple jump. Jim Smith was fourth in the 200-meter dash and fifth in the 100-meter dash.

Mattoon won one of the four relay races conducted. Bess' 3200-meter unit was victorious. This action marks the final tuneup for Mattoon prior to competing in Friday's Big 12 Conference meet in Champaign. Mattoon freshman Alan Snedeker spun a two-hitter in blanking the DANVILLE, 111. Doug Whitworth and Stan Freeman should have assured themselves of a No.l seed in doubles play for the upcoming District here Monday. They defeated Danville's top duo. 6-0, 6-1 for practically the only bright spot in a 7-2 Green Wave loss to the Vikings. "Doug and Stan have now defeated four (Charleston, Urbana, Danville and Paris) of the six schools entered in the District," Green Wave coach Tom Epperson points out.

"The only two they haverit defeated are Neoga and Casey, but I don't think they'll have any trouble with them," he added.
