1 1 1 B-4-Mattoon, (II.) Journal Gazette-Thursday, September 21, 1989 Eastern immfwm -1 Favorites listed for Little Brown Jug of a lifetime. To win it twice would be even greater." The driver who guided B.J. Scoot to the victory in 1:52 3-5 was Michel LaChance, who will also be In the sulky of Goalie Jeff. Goalie Jeff, a bay colt by Cam Fella, has 10 wins, five seconds and three thirds in 22 starts in 1989 and has won $1,164,544. Owned by Centre Ice Stable of Islington, Ontario, his areer best time is 1:51 3-5.

But working against the favorite is his post position. Goalie Jeff will be coming out of the No.7 hole in the third division, which also features 7-2 choice Kick Up A Storm and 9-2 Casino Cowboy. DELAWARE, Ohio (AP) -Goalie Jeff is the early favorite, but Ohio-bred Barefoot Hanover is the crowd's choice for the 44th Little Brown Jug Thursday. Goalie Jeff, trained by Tom Artandi, is the early 2-1 preference in the third of pacing's Triple Crown events. The race will feature a record purse of $500,200 and the largest field ever, 29 3-year-olds.

Artandi will be seeking his second Jug victory in a row. He trained B.J. Scoot, the winner last year. "This means everything. It's the most prestigious harness race on this continent," said Artandi, one of the top names in Canadian harness racing.

"Winning it once was the thrill I "w- 1 1 IB 1 I "Mfc li.i i 'ii i Vt i i it to play that day." Sengstock's ready Sullivan's J.R. Elder remains Eastern's probable starter at fullback, but the Panthers are now counting on plenty of help from John Sengstock. Sengstock, a junior who started the past two seasons, missed this year's first two games with a foot injury but had a good second-half showing Saturday at Southern. "I don't think there is any question he is a bigger load," Spoo said of Sengstock "I think we've got two solid performers. They can both help us, but I think eventually because of his experience and size he'll move In there." Sengstock is 5-foot-ll, 200 pounds, while Elder, a sophomore walk-on is 5-8, 180.

The fact that both are now available helps a backfield that has lacked depth. "Knowing J.R. did so well in (Sengstock's) absence and knowing we have two solid performers there we're certainly not as afraid of going with two-back sets as we once were," Spoo said. Stat leaders Eastern's Jamie Jones continues to defy his 5-8, 155-pound size. The sophomore running back leads the Gateway in rushing and pass receptions per game.

Jones is 14th among NCAA I-AA rushers averaging 103 yards per game and 21st in all purpose running at 139.33 yards per game. Ray D'Alesio, an Illinois Valley Community College transfer, is six-for-slx as a Panther field goal kicker and is two field goals per game tie for second among the national leaders. Daryl Holcombe's 36.6 average on five kickoff returns is second in 1-AA. Eastern stands fourth nationally in passing defense allowing 89.0 yards per game and 11th in total defense at 233.3. The Gateway's Northern Iowa Is second in total defense at 182.0 yards per game.

1 I 1 hi Bob Spoo favorite Southwest Missouri State 31-10, was expected to contend for a league championship. The Sycamores boast impressive offensive statistics leading the 'Gateway in total offense at 404.0 yards per game and passing offense at 186.0. Quarterback John Sahm entered the season as an all-conference candidate and is averaging 155.7 passing yards per game. But the surprise might be a strong running game following the graduation of all-Gateway running back Tori Vactor. No less than a dozen backs have carried the ball for thVSycamores, whose 218 yards per game rushing rank second in the conference.

The running game may help open things up for Ail-American receiver Steve Elmlinger and second-team All-Gateway Rodney Porter. That all adds up to making Eastern an underdog. But then again, Southern Illinois was supposed to be an underdog last week against the Panthers. "I think on paper they (the Sycamores) would be able to produce more (than EIU's first three foes this season)," Spoo said. "But all that's negatedHf they're not ready to play and we are.

I Off regular price I U0QDY BEAT0 11IDA0 By BRIAN NIELSEN Staff Writer CHARLESTON Coach Bob Spoo said Wednesday he hasn't recovered from last week's Gateway Conference football loss at Southern Illinois.

And his Panthers haven't forgotten, if practice this week is any indication. "We've had good practices," Spoo said. "We thought they were good last week until we saw (Tuesday's) intensity. You can get lulled into things. You can do the right things but not have the intensity.

"You can see the contrast from last week to this." It isn't because EIU coaches are putting guns to players' heads forcing extra push-ups or wind sprints. "The tempo was picked up by the players," Spoo said. "It's their doing. We' didn't have to spend a lot of time telling them they played poorly." The coaches' contribution to the change in practice has been pitting offensive starters against defensive starters. "We did put in a lot of good against good, so to speak, rather than using scout teams," Spoo said.

"We've spent a period doing that." These are the actions of a team backed against a wall after only one conference game. And the. Panthers will be facing a team just as desperate when Indiana State comes to O'Brien Stadium for a 6:30 p.m. Saturday game- Both teams are 2-1 overall but 0-1 In the Gateway. "I heard (Indiana State) coach (Dennis) Raetz on a Terre Haute TV station (Tuesday) 'night say that if they lost another game it would put them out of the conference race," Spoo said.

"I think we're probably both in that situation." Indiana State, ranked in the NCAA Division I-AA preseason poll before losing to -Gateway Tuscola vs. ARCOLA It will be No.l seeded Tuscola against No.2 seeded Bement in tonight's championship game after both posted semifinals wins here Wednesday night. Tuscola, Improving to 10-1, defeated Areola 15-10 and 15-5 before unbeaten Bement extended its record to 10-0 with 15-11 and 15-4 wins over Sullivan after dropping the first game 16-14. "They play well together really a family unit all the way around," Sullivan coach Debbie Fisher said of Bement. "They're definitely one of the better teams we've faced this season." Still, the Lady Redskins coach was hopeful of pulling off an upset especially after shooting out to a first game victory.

"We just didn't pull together as a team all the way through," she pinpointed. "Whenever we made some mistakes we were worrying too much about what we did wrong instead of looking ahead. "Plus, we didn't serve well, we didn't do a very good job of blocking and we didn't use the net like we needed to," she added. The loss leaves Sullivan with a 6-5 record to take against Areola, 4-5, in tonight's third place match starting The championship game between Tuscola and Bement will start at approximately 8 o'clock. Tiffany French had 13 points, 3 perfect passes, 7 kills and 8 assists for Sullivan in a losing cause Wednesday while Becky Clayton finished with 8 poitns, 6 perfect, passes, 8 kills; Dawn Cripes, 8 kills, 3 points; Lori Moody, 5 points, 9 kills, 12 assists; Amanda Glazebrook, 18 perfect passes, 2 kills and Lynn Bickers, 12 perfect passes and 2 kills.

IECK BROS.) AUTO TRUCK SERVICE inilh lovt 5-Motlooi 24 HR. ROAD SERVICE ft TOWING) i 1 Mackovic: Good to be home CHAMPAIGN, 111. Illinois Coach John Mackovic said Tuesday the 38-7 loss at Colorado won't shake his players confidence for long. "We can play good football we believe in that," said Mackovic. "We just made so many mistakes mentally." Mackovic said he is looking for improvement this week in carrying out individual assignments and in basic techniques, such as blocking and running pass routes.

"It will be good to be home," said Mackovic. The Illinl play (heir first game of the year in Memorial Stadium on Saturday against Utah State. "I think a lot of the guys are hurting and disappointed," said Illinl punter Brian Menkhausen. "It will be a key factor for our team to put this (loss) behind us and get ready for Utah State." Illinois, which opened the season with a 14-13 upset of Southern California, is 1-1 for the season. Utah State is 0-2 after opening the season with a 45-10 loss to Utah, then falling to Southern Cal 66-10 last weekend.

Coach Chuck Shelton said the two losses have not demoralized the Aggies. "Our kids are really enthusiastic," said Shelton. "I don't think they ever concede victory. We will play the game hard." Mackovic said despite the score of the Colorado game, there were some positive things. He said he thought the Illinl kicking was good, and he was not disappointed with the running game.

However, he said the team will miss running back Darren Boyer, who injured his knee at Colorado and will be out for the remainder of the season. Mackovic said he now hopes to get a little more than he expected from one of two freshmen running backs Steve' Feagin and Wagner Lester. They likely will join rushing leader Howard Griffith, who has carried 28 times for 100 yards and a touchdown. "Our offense has to develop some consistency and make some drives and get some things done," said Mackovic. "We have to create more big play opportunities score more points." Colorado stopped Illinois' passing attack, sacking quarterback Jeff George four times and intercepting two of his passes.

George suffered a minor knee strain but Mackovic said George would practice this week for Utah State. "They are a good blitzing team and we have not handled the blitz very well," said Mackovic. "We need good, individual, man-to-man protection." Mackovic discounted the importance of the wide margin of victory in the USC-Utah State game, saying Southern Cal "came out with a vengeance" against the Aggies after losing to Illinois the week before. But, Shelton said he figures Illinois will play with the same intensity Saturday to make up for the loss at Colorado. "I'm sure Illinois is upset," said Shelton.

"We understand the frame of mind they'll be in. We can't do anything about that." He said he plans to start quarterback Kevin White, but also will use Kirk Johnson. ytah State depends heavily on the pass, and each quarterback has thrown 30 times. White has completed 13 for 134 yards and a touchdown; Johnson has completed nine for 140 yards but has been in-' tercepted twice. Illinois also has relied on its-aerial attack.

George has completed 39 of 67 passes for 347 yards and two touchdowns, while being picked off three times: Sports Monu Today 4 p.m.-MJHS Wildcats vs. Neoga in Effingham Sacred Heart IESA Baseball Regional. 4 p.m.-MHS girls golf team at Effingham. 4 p.m.-MHS boys golf team hosts Decatur and Eisenhower. 6 p.m girls volleyball team hosts Normal In Green Wave Gym.

The first-year coach is almost lost for words in trying to explain the disappointing performance. "At the beginning of the season we had several people playing solid volleyball and for some reason we seemed to have lost that drive," she said. "But, we came together In the second match (against Parkland) and played very well. Hopefully, the girls have snapped out of their frustrating period of play and are ready to return to form.

It was definitely a big win for us." Kristi Carrell led the way with 10 kills while Shannon Bridges added 8, Tammy Sharp seven and Jenny Schaal 10 assist to also figure in the success. "Tammy Sharp was the only bright note in the first match," Buntons said. "She had 7 kills. Otherwise, there wasn't anything worth mentioning." The split leaves LLC with an 8-4 record to take against Meramec College of St.Louis, and Kaskaskia College of Centralia in the Laker Fieldhouse.
