Okon jumps to Arizomia 0 (. 167-91 record at Iowa will begin immediately. "It's really hard to say exactly how soon, (a successor will be named), but we certainlywill start Just as soon as we possibly can in observing all the various things that go along with the replacing of a major coach." "There's no question about the fact that time is getting on and we want to get a replacement as soon as we possibly can," he said, "To pinpoint a target date at this moment would be a little premature." Elliott said he expects a smooth transition since Olson built a "sound program" and left the team with a "very firm foundation." Olson was contacted immediately following Iowa's loss to Villanova last Friday night in the NCAA Midwest Regional at Kansas City, and he traveled to Tucson to meet with Arizona's athletic director Cedric Dempsey. Another candidate considered for the Arizona post was Gene Bartow, coach at Alabama-Birmingham. Arizona athletic officials said they had requested permission from various schools to speak with about 25 other coaches, including Olson.

Olson reportedly met with his team Monday evening, although it was unknown what was said. Olson took the Hawkeyes to five straight NCAA post-tournament appearances, a Big Ten record. Iowa finished fifth in the league at 10-8 this year. Seeded No. 7 in the NCAA Midwest Regional this year, Iowa beat Utah State, 64-59, in the first round and Big Eight champion Missouri, 77-63, before bowing to Villanova, 55-54.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (UPI) Lute Olson, the winningest basketball coach at the University of Iowa, has accepted the coaching post at the University of Arizona, Iowa Athletic Director Bump Elliott confirmed today. Olson, who completed his ninth season at Iowa last week, told Elliott Monday night hi decision to accept the head basketball job at Arizona -will be announced at a news conference today in Tucson. "He made the decision that he will accept an offer to move to the University of Arizona as basketball coach," Elliott said. "Olson's decision came rather suddenly, it certainly wasn't pre-planned in any, way, shape or form;" Olson decided to leave because he and his family prefer living in the West, where Olson spent most of his life, Elliott said, and "it wasn't anything that was lacking in Iowa." "The fact that Lute had lived there most of his life and his children had been raised out that way there's no question he had a great desire to move back to that direction. Olson will replace Ben Lindsey, who was fired this season his first at Arizona after his team finished 1-17 in the Pacific Ten and 4-24 overall.

Elliott said Arizona has a "fine program" that will offer Olson an "opportunity for him to suceed there." Olson, who had eight years left on a 10-year contract, reportedly was offered an estimated $150,000 a year for the post, with some $60,000 a base salary and the balance in fringe benefits. Elliott said the selection process to replace Olson who compiled a Wednesday, March 30, 1983 -Mattoon (II.
