(UPI) -The job market for college graduates this year looks very good despite spiraling inflation and predictions of an economic recession, an annual Northwestern University job survey indicates. "The job market for college graduates for this graduating class is very good," said Frank S. Endicott, author of the annual survey of employment trends for college graduates.

"In genera, companies are optimistic for business conditions for the remainder of the year." Endicott said he surveyed 102 "major industrial concerns" and discovered they plan to hire 19 percent more bachelor-degree graduates than in 1978 and 11 percent more master-degree graduates. He does not identify the firms. The greatest increases In employment opportunities ire in the technical fields, such 'as engineering, accounting, business administration and computer science, he said. The steady decline during the past few years in employment opportunities for liberal arts graduates will continue in 1979, Endicott said, with companies hiring 6 percent fewer bachelor-degree-grads In 1978, WEST AKQ 43 10 7 3 J76 EAST 10 9 8 6 2 2 95 10 9 8 2 SOUTH J4 10 6 5 A 4 K43 Vulnerable: East-West -Dealer: South West North East South 2 3V Pass 4 Pass Pass Pass The basic play is to strip the hand and come down to a four-card ending. West will have thrown one diamond and will still be holding 10 7 while East will, be holding 9 5 and two black cards.

North and South each hold one trump and three diamonds. If West holds 10 9 there is an' easy end play, but South knows that West would have thrown the jack-10 or nine to avoid that so South leads the last trump (high trump in dummy) and West must drop the jack or 10 to keep the seven spot. Now South leads dummy's six. East must play the nine, whereupon South plays his queen and West is caught in an end play due to the fact that dummy's eight has become the second highest diamond. The play has only worked because East's one high diamond was the nine.

If East held the 10, West could hold 9 and the play of the 10 from East would kill all end plays. (NEWSPAPER ENTERPRISE ASSN (For a copy of JACOBY MODERN, send S1 to: "Win at Bridge," care of this newspaper, P.O. Box 489, Radio City Station. New York, N. Y.

But, if you are fortunate enough to have a roof with a reasonable pitch a ranch or a Cape Cod home, for example you might consider taking on the job and pocketing at least half of what a professional would charge. Even if you decide to call in a pro, a good knowledge of how a roof should be applied will put you in a position to make sure that you get the job you are paving for. For example, Popular En-cylopedia points out that it's okay to put the new roof over the old, but it there are already two layers of shingles up there, the roof should be stripped and the job started from scratch. Leif Thompson, University of Illinois Extension reproductive physiologist, will run the clinic, which will be repeated in Champaign July 11-12. The program is designed to help swine producers improve their use of facilities by maintaining a uniform flow of hogs through the operation, Thompson said, The clinic will also focus z.zrZt??7t efficiency and more, effective management. Capping at the ridge can be done with a 12-in wide strip of roll roofing. But it is more common to use full shingles cut into thirds. These are then applied.

The final ridge shingle receives four nails. Make certain you seal, the exposed nailheads with roof cement. have adhesive patches aMfrtbe tabs. Words of caution: For maximum traction, use rubber-soled shoes or sneakers when roofing. And don't walk on the edges of the shingles because you are apt to crack them. Instead, place your feet squarely on shingle centers. (Editors Note: For further information, write: Popular Mechanics En-Cyclopedia, Dept. 1114, 250 W.

You'll need that extra length to assure good holding power. About asphalt shingles: The square-butt shingle measures 12x36 has three tabs and is normally laid with 5 in. exposed to the weather. There are 27 strips in a bundle and three bundles make up a square (100 square feet). Store the bundles of shingles flat, or the strips are likely to curl as the bundles are opened for use.

Begin by checking the old roof, nailing down any loose shingles and replacing any that are damaged. If warped or rotten boards (sheathing) are present, usually under bumps or bulges, remove the shingles, replace the boards and weave in replacement shingles. The sign outside Bridges House, the official governor's residence, says it was built before 1748 by Capt. Ebenezer Eastman and is the oldest house in East Concord. -Not so by nearly a hundred years, says architectural historian James L. Garvin. 4jf Garvin, from the New Hampshire Historical Society, toured the house recently after local history buff John Rexford said it just didn't look right for the 18th century.

Garvin agreed. He said the house was held together with a type of nails that didn't appear until after 1795, and has roof construction common to the 19th century. Topics to be convered include general reproductive biology, selection and development of breeding stock, checking estrus and proper breeding time. Thompson will also discuss boar management, development of a gilt pool, causes of reproductive failure and use of artifician insemination. Introducing new animals into the breeding herd, assessing boars' reproductive capabilities and applying management schedules will also be discussed.
