The film is another collaboration between director Lumet and scriptwriter Jay Presson Allen, and it's certainly a change of pace from their last effort, the memorable "Prince of the City." Although the film consists almost entirely of interior shots, Lumet devises a variety of camera angles and settings to keep things fluid.

The cast has a grand time, with Caine and Dyan Cannon (as his high-strung wife) hamming it up, abetted by Irene Worth as a psychic neighbor with a Dutch accent to thick you could slice it with a knife. Reeve's skillful underplaying provides a nice contrast, and of course this is a change of pace from his Superman "Deathtrap" is not a MATTOON at Kerasotes Cinema, is a Sidney Lumet's film version of the longest-running mystery in Broadway history. I haven't seen the play by Ira Levin, but if it's anything like the movie, it's easy to see why it's been a hit since it opened in 1978. In the film, Michael Caine plays a successful author of Broadway mysteries who's had four flops in a row. When he receives a copy of a new play from a former student (Christopher Reeve) whose work is a surefire hit, he decides to kill (he student and pass the play off as his own.

There's not much depth to "Deathtrap" and little wit or sparkle to the dialogue. About the only bon mot is "Nothing recedes like success."
