Len Harkabus, a 6-3 forward, paced Roosevelt with 14 points. Roosevelt's Lakers, an NCAA Division HI team, now is 9-13. "Our practices the last couple days have been oriented toward getting ready for Youngstown," Panther coach Don Eddy said afterwards.

"We worked on Youngstown but we talked about Roosevelt." And Eddy thought Roosevelt played well early. "They were patient. They moved the ball around. It was good for us and finally our guys got going," he said. Actually, Eddy said, he saw several positive signs in Thursday's contest, "I thought our passing was good against tne zone.

Dennis (Mumford) moved nice and went to the basket. Jim Williams had one of his better games and Pick (Mike Pickens) was consistent again. "Pick started slow on defense but after the early going, he played well." Pickens again stood out. The junior guard made seven of 11 shots, grabbed four rebounds and handed out five assists for' baskets. Pick was five for five from the floor in the second half.

Eddy also said reserves Jones and Patten "played well. I liked what Lance did at both ends of the floor. Warren was back in things tonight. He's had a couple good practices in a row." After the sluggish start, Eastern dominated the game. The 87 points is a new season high for Eastern.

JG Sports Editor MATTOON Lake Land Lakers may face Kankakee Community College in a key Central Illinois Athletic Conference basketball clash Saturday without four of their players, including two full-time starters.

It was revealed this morning that Gregory Clay, sophomore from Calumet, and Derrick Armstrong, freshman from Zlon, both starters, along with reserve players Scott Rushton, freshman from Schiller Park, and Mike Glover, freshman from Chicago, pleaded guilty Thursday to mobile home burglary charges. A fifth Lake Land College student, 21-year-old Thomas E. Schreiner, also was charged along with the four. He is a former member of the Laker basketball team who dropped off the squad a few weeks ago. All five were sentenced to two years' probation and ordered to pay restitution and court costs.

Clay, 20, of Suburban Trallways Park, Mattoon, pleaded guilty to the Nov. 25 burglary of a trailer In the park occupied by Julie Daugberty Rushton, 18, of the Red Roof Motel and Glover, 19, of Suburban Trallways Park, pleaded guilty to the Nov. 22 burglary of the Kerry Johnston trailer in the park. Armstrong, 19, of Suburban Trallways Park, pleaded State-ranked Railers at Green Wave gym tonight CHARLESTON, 111. Most of Eastern Illinois University's basketball players and fans took the night off Thursday.

Fortunately for Panther coach Don Eddy, just enough players and fans on hand at Lantz Gym for Eastern's 87-58 win over Roosevelt University of Chicago. Just 1.300 fans turned out to see the Panthers romp to their 17th win against 4 defeats. Perhaps most people were looking past Thursday's game to Saturday's Important Mid-Continent Conference encounter with Youngstown State. Roosevelt played the Panthers even for the game's first 10 minutes. Then reserves Lance Jones, Jim Williams, Rico Ellis and Warren Patten, plus starting forward Ricky Robinson at center; sparked Eastern to a 37-27 halftlme lead.

DennlsMumford led the Pan ther scoring on the night with 18 points while four other players also scored in double figures. Mike Pickens continued his fine play with 14, Williams and Craig DeWitt each had 11 and Patten scored 10. Williams' total marked the first time all season the 6-6 sophomore has been in double figures. For Patten it was the first time he had scored at least Wildcats advance to title game MATTOON Mattoon out-scored Champaign Central 17-10 in the second quarter here Thursday en route to a 58-43 freshman basketball victory. The two clubs were tied 10-10 after the first quarter of play.

Creek suggested a couple of penalties which may be administered. They presently are in second place with a 4-2 record, a half game behind league-leading Parkland Allege. 4-1. Kankakee, presently ranked No.2 in this week's national Junior College poll with its 22-2 season record, Is third in the five-team standings with a 3-2 record.

Danville is fourth at 3-3 followed by Lincoln Land College of Springfield, 0-6. game. Eddie Johnson, continuing his pattern of scoring well in the second half, paced the lllini with 19 points, 14 in the final 20 minutes, and Mark Smith added 14. The Big 12 conference is going to a home and away schedule for girls basketball next season and Altamont is one of six non-conference games which Mat- toon is dropping. LOUIS (UPI) Seven-time All Pro cornerback Roger Wehrli has signed a series of one-year contracts with the St. Louis Cardinals, the team has announced. Terms of the three-year agreement, reached Thursday, were not disclosed. Wehrli, an 11-year NFL veteran, was the first of 10 Cardinals who became free agents Feb. 1 to sign with the club.

"As has been the case in past we don't have a bunch of superstars like many people would suspect," be continued. "We don't have a 6-8 center and or a 6-4 guard. "We simply rely on overall team play. These kids play well together. "We average 65 points offensively and 52 on defense so as you can see by that we haven't been going around blowing a lot of teams out of the gyni.

failed to score for eight and Lantz leidnouse. at Urbana. to Pound Altamont 71-37 CHAMPAIGN, 111. (UPI) -As they all are in the-Big Ten, Illinois won a "must" game over Wisconsin Thursday night. The lllini and Badgers entered the contest tied for eighth place in the Big Ten, both with 4-6 records.

Illinois emerged with a 67-50 victory over a cold-shooting Wisconsin and the story was the difference between the two halves. "I felt in the first half we weren't moving very smoothly, then in the second half we came out and played about as good a defense as we played all year," said Illinois Coach Lou Henson, whose team is now 15-8 overall. Wisconsin, now 12-10 for the season, never trailed in the first half, building leads of 10 points on two occasions. 'But Illinois whittled away at the margin and tied it 30-all at halftime on two freethrows by Perry Range. After intermission, the Badgers went ice cold and Perry expressed pleasure that Allee played one of her better games.

"Angle was more relaxed out there. She played a lot better. To me it seems that If one girl, and I don't care who it is, isn't clicking right, it messes up the whole bunch," Perry said. East St. Louis Lincoln finished second in the girls' state tournament last year to Nile West and is expected to be the supersec-tional foe of the regional-sectional route Mattoon Is aligned with.

Mattoon coach Dwight Perry indicated poor shooting from the field was the only overall fault of his team throughout the game. From the field the Wavettes hit 31 of 84 shots and were just nine of 19 from the free throw line. "I still think we're In a slump," Perry said. "For some reason for the last two or three games we haven't been able to hit," he lamented.

Perry was referring to the Springfield game In which tha Wavettes shot 21 of 88 and the7 Charleston game In which they hit just 22 of 68. Mattoon had problems with lead. Allee Ml A free throw to put Mattoon ahead for good, as it turned In the second period, the Wavettes simply outclassed the Indians. Altamont 'didn't help their own cause by turning the ball over a whopping 16 times in the first quarter. The Indians lost the ball 10 times in the second quarter and 45 times for the game.

Despite having a size advantage over the Wavettes, including 6-2 Pam Berg, Altamont could not get a shooting game going underneath. Altamont did control the boards 25-18 in the first half, but Berg wasn't able to hit a field goal in seven attempts in the flrsthalf.
