He and his wife live at 308 Hickory Lane. With Sheppard's move to the top of the admininstrative ladder in the district, a new principal at the high school was needed. The logical man to fill that position was Tom Buchanan, who had served as Sheppard's assistant at the high school for eight years. Buchanan said that he sees no challenges to the high school In the future but only the need to "keep improving on what we have." He said that there will be some changes in high school education in the future. "We will have a more independent course of study for some students in the future and also a shorter school day." Buchanan and his staff have already made moves towards instituting those changes by allowing juniors and seniors to sign up for an early dismissal program, which will get them ou of school a 1 1 40 or 2 40 Buchanan is no stranger to a principal's office, having served as prinicpal at Cumberland High school during the 20 years he was in the Cum- MATTOON The Mattoon School District will be beginning the school year with some familiar faces in unfamiliar positions.

The biggest change is In the office of Community Unit Two Superintendent. Roy Sheppard, who had served In various posts since coming to Mattoon In 1952, moved from the principal's office at Mattoon High School to the top spot in the school district. After 15 years as the high school principal and 10 years in other positions within the school district, Sheppard was named superintendent to replace Ray Lane. "The superintendent's job is quite a challenge," Sheppard said. "I am enjoying it very much." He that while the job is a challenging one, it 'is not "radically different" from being principal.

"After 25 years in the system, nothing is that big a change," he said. Sheppard has been in ad ministrative posts almost since he came to the district. He came to Mattoon from the Leaf River School District as a chemistry teacher in the high school. In 1956, Sheppard moved up a notch when he was named as the high school assistant principal. He moved within the system again in 1960 when he went to Central Junior High School two years before he was brought back to the high school as principal in 1962.
