Tuesday, 13, Journal Gazette-! Coyote poison killing eagles To your Health By Dr. Lawrence Lamb DENVER (UPI) Colorado wildlife officials say they are helpless to prosecute ranchers and sheepmen who may be setting out an illegal predator poison that's killing bald and golden eagles. The livestock raisers on the western slope are trying to get coyotes who are killing off their herds. Instead, they are getting federally protected bald and golden eagles, more than a dozen of which have been found killed by the poison this spring eagles were found but couldnt do anything about it "Under the federal law," a spokesman said, "prosecution would fail without a witness who saw the rancher distribute the poison baits." He said someone also would have to witness the eagles feeding off the baits and then die. Ray Burke, chief of the Colorado Division of Animal Industry, said even if prosecution was successful, the only punishment available is to cancel their poisoning permits.

"We can say, "We'll Jerk your but they'll just say, Go ahead and jerk it," Burke said. "We'll just have go back (to the legislature) and try to get a penal provision written into the law." State officials also are trying to track down where the ranchers are getting the poison, called thallium sulfate. The only manufactuer of it in the region, the American Smelting and Refining Co'st Denver factory, stopped selling it four years ago. The company also recalled all of the recently-sold thallium and reimbursed the ranchers. A spokesman for the VS.

Fish and Wildlife Sen-ice said there have been some leads. "Our agents are checking the possibility that there is someone in Craig who has some left and is selling it here and there, the spokesman said. "We think we know who it is. But it's kind of funny. He's a pretty wealthy man.

He's not in it for the money." treated with WBE are still Lke-ly to have severe shocklike reactions with a subsequent sting. Dr. William Busse of University of Wisconsin and his associates recently published one of their cases in the Journal of the American Medical Association (March 17, 1975). The young woman was not protected by the WBE treatment. She was then treated with a purified venom from honey bees.

This treatment gradually worked, and she became fully protected from the danger of honey bee stings. Similar results have been noted by scientists at the State University of New York at Buffalo and in Baltimore's Good Samartain Hospital. Purified venom seems to be far superior, and it can be specific for that patient's reaction. Some people are reactors to bee stings but not wasp stings and vice versa. Unfortunately, purified venom is not available readily at present.

It is expected to be produced in commercial amounts soon. Meanwhile the best you and other people with similar problems can do is use the WBE treatment available. And, 1 would strongly support your doctor in recommending this treatment You should also take all the important precautions you can -against exposing your daughter to bee stings. That means keep ing flowers and shrubs down from around the house. Also, have her wear white or light colored clothing.

She should avoid using scents, such as perfume and cosmetics that tend to attract bees. You should talk to your doctor about the advisability of having a readily available sting kit. Reactions are sometimes swift and severe. Be prepared for a severereaction ahead of time. If shekels stung, scrape the stinger out, don't pull it and squeeze more venom into her.

in two counties. DEAR DBjLAMB In one of your columns you mentioned a treatment for persons allergic to bee stings. My daughter is highly allergic, and each sting she gets a worse reaction. We have been told the only treatment is bi-weekly shots for about seven years and even then it is no assurance that they will help. Do you recommend an easier, surer procedure? DEAR READER I wish I could.

There are probably nearly a million people who have severe reactions to bee and wasp stings each year. As many as 40 deaths occur annually. I mention this to emphasize it is not a minor matter, and you must get proper treatment for your daughter. The most commonly available method of treatment is to give repeated injections of an extract prepared from the crushed whole bodies of stinging insects, referred to as WBE. This is really a desensitizing procedure.

A review of the success of this procedure shows that 95 per cent of patients treated this way do not have any problem with subsequent stings. But, that may often be a happy coincidence, tending more to prove that many people who have a severe reaction once will not have such a reaction a second time. ln-a controlled study of untreated patients, 60 per cent didn't have any serious reaction to subsequent stings, either. Even more disquieting is the observation that some patients Agents for the U.S, Fish and Wildlife Service and the Colorado Division "oF Wildlife began an investigation in mid-March. They identified the rancher who owns or leases land on which some of the That's why we offer Credit Check Even vnth crystal ball you 'r gong to get a (truncal surprise now and then With a Fist National Credit Check account, you can write yourself a loan anywhere, 24 hours a day.
