of of of AWARDS BY BOARD IN INJURY CASES The State Industrial Board has made awards in the personal injury cases of McClelland versus the Central Ilinots Public Service Company, and Avers versus the Central Illinois Publie Service Company, Anding the former entitled to compensation for eight. weeks at $8.40 and for the latter for operating expenses amounting to $150. Both cases were heard by Commissioner Tanner of Paris, the McClelland hearing being held in the city court room, that of Ayers being heard at the court 1 house in Charleston. McClelland sustained an ankle injury while at work in the local power plant of the Public Service Company. The evidence at the hearing was that he was entitled to from six to eight weeks compensation.

Ayers sustained a rupture while delivering ice for the company in Charleston. The company prior to the hearing offered too pay operation expenses in 1 the sum of $150. Ayers refused to undergo an operation, claimIng permanent disability. C. W.

Hughes represented the Public Service Company at each hearing. NOTE SUIT COMES UP FOR TRIAL IN THE CITY COURT The note suit of the National Bank of Mattoon versus C. A. Aldrich of Hoopeston ani Charles T. Welch of Mattoon was brought to trial today in' the Mattoon city court before a jury composed of Eli Rogers, Ed Van Tassell, George Goodwin, J.

L. Reat, Gus Ferrish, Oscar Fuqua, Charleston; R. G. Smith, North Okaw; Barnett Wright, William Childress, Ashmore; J. M.

Reed, Cal Crum, Mattoon; 0. C. Baker, Lafayette. The National Bank of Mattoon a few weeks ago, in the city court, took judgment by confession against Aldrich and Welch for $986. Welch, soon afterward succeeded in having the judgment set aside, with permission to file pleadings.

The arguments on the demurrers and replications to the pleadings required several days. Vause, Hughes Kiger represented the bank, offering no testimony when the evidence of the defendants was concluded. A. C. Anderson of Charleston represented Welch.

Decatur, Dec. petition, asking for an election to vote upon the recall of the commission form of government in- Decatur, was thrown out by the county court here today on the grounds that it did not contain a sufficient number of lawful signatures. The petition when filed contained about 4700 names, while only 4017 names were necessary, but the circulators of the petition did not use care in securing signatures as the law prescribes.

and Mrs. H. V. Ralston and children went to Terre Haute today for a Christmas visit with relatives, Mr. Ralston will return home Monday evening, but Mrs.

Raiston and the children will probably pass the entire holidays in that city. Miss Fanchon Luke of Los Angeles, is spending a short time with Miss Mildred Vause while enroute to Arthur for a visit during the holidays with a sister. Miss Luke is a fellow student of Miss Vause at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, MATTOON HOTEL CO. IS SUED FOR $1000 Suit was filed in the circuit court in Charleston today by J. W.

E. C. Craig, representing the Champaign Gas, and Electric Supply Company of Champaign, asking damages in the sum of $1000 from the Mattoon Hotel Company, which operates the Hotel Byers. la stated that the plaintiff company had the contract for installing the gas and electric Axtures in the Hotel Byers at the time of its reconstruction, and that there is a balance of $1000 due on the contract price. CHILD PAINFULLY BURNED BY FALLING INTO TUB OF WATER John, the five- year old son of Dr.

SOCIAL AFFAIRS CLASS MEETING- The Loyal Daughters' Class of the First Christian Church met on Friday afternoon with Mrs.

George B. Harned, 305 South Twenty-first street. The time was taken up principally with a business session after which refreshments were served. Mrs. Harned was assisted by Mrs.

William Wise and Mrs. Ralph Williams. Christmas adornments placed about the house made a pretty effect for the afternoon's party. SURPRISE MR. DAVIS-.

On Thursday evening the members of Mattoon Canton gave Jesse Davis a member of the Canton, a surprise at his home, 2809 Shelby avenue. Mr. Davis was married on Wednesday, and in honor of the event his fellow lodge associates called to spend several hours with him. After a social period Mr. Davis served light refreshments.

Knerr, Jesse Glover, William Smith, William Henry and Jesse Orndorff, REMNANTS MEETA Christmas tree was the feature of the meeting of the Remnants Club on Friday evening at the home of Miss Ethel Businger, 1301 Edgar avenue. The tree was prettily decorated and contained a gift for each- member of the club, the gifts having been contributed by the different Sewing was the evening's diversion. CHARLES CROSS DIES AT OLD FOLKS' HOME Charles Cross, aged about seventytwo years, for nine years a member of the Odd Fellows' Old Folks' Home colony, passed away this morning at six o'clock. Death was due to the infirmities of age, Funeral services will be conducted on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock from the chapel of the home. Burial will be made in Dodge Grove tery. Rev.

Kendall have turned from Toledo, 0., where they were. guests of the Automobile Company Wednesday and Thursday. The company has been, since December 4, entertaining its representatives and invited guests from all parts of the country. The men from Mattoon joined a party of almost three hundred men at Indianapolis and: traveled in a special Pullman train to Toledo. They were given an opportunity to see the work of building automobiles.

MEMBERS BLOOMINGTON PARTY IN A SERIOUS CONDITION International News Service, Atlanta, Dec. Three of the Bloomington, party injured Friday when their automobile was crashed into at a grade crossing by a railroad train, are still unconscious at a local hospital today, and seemingly have no chance for recovery.
