Although we live In a time of chance and turmoil, all Ls not yet lost. The old ways are vanishing fast, but here and there a community stands out like a rock for Its traditional virtues, Texas, to be brief, is proving a Gibraltar. The other day Oene Howe, the Am-arillo editor, Invited Garden, the grand opera star, to a tea.

He alv invited some forty leading Amarillo citizens to the tea, and stipulated that they must wear 'frock coats so that the occasion might be just what a widely traveled grand Opera star could expect. But frock coats in Texas? The forty guests searched their No frock coats. They sjjgjjf downtown to was to be had. The Panhandle has never found much use for them, and the clothiers simply hadn't stocked them. So, the end, the forty Texans bad to wire to effete Chicago and have their frock coats sent down special delivery.

All of this, very likely, is relatively unimportant in a day of great issues and knotty problems. But there la tqpifthtpg extremely encouraging about It, Just the same. The frock coat, a minor matter at best, ls a symbol and so 1 the fact that the Texas Panhandle tamed out to be a frock coat-less area. For the frock coat what Is it, any-nvf A useless and not nartkularlv attractive Item of wearing apparel, used only on occasions where one must put on the dog. No man dons one, ever, unless he has become citified and fashion-conscious.

If ts out of place In the great open spaces. Romance Is not in it. The arrival of trie frock coat on any scene means that frontier days are gone forever, and that the memory of them has grown dim. The hardy pioneers, who seldom shaved, never bathed, and dressed if the old song ls to be believed in leather breeches, would very likely have shot any man who put on a frock coat in their presence. And Texas is not just one of the foity-elght states in the American union.

It is well, it is Texas, a state set apart, a state with a great tradition. Texas is not supposed to be citified. A Texan, whether he likes It or not, ls supposed to be a brawny, twofisted, energetic man who can gallop from Port Worth to the Rio Orande before breakfast, shoo tine, hall a dozen Ka iia rva maiiIa. aiwI-. I it 1t.m 4m bis person the best features of Tom Mix, Douglas Fairbanks and Bam Houston.

Putting htm in a frock coat is like putting New York's Jimmy Walker In chaps and a sombrero. It goes against nature So, we repeat, it is comforting to find that Amarillu can put on frock coats for a tea party only by virtue of special delivery bervice from Chicago. To be sure, after Mr. Howe's party the Panhandle will be harboring at least forty frock coats, but the Panhandle Is large, they will not go far, and they will seldom be worn. Texas is still Texas.

BR00MC0RN INDUSTRY SHIFTING WESTWARD Washington, Nov. 10. The broom-corn Industry of the country Is shilling westward, according to the department of agriculture. Owing to the fact that broomcorn is drought resistant it la adapted to the semi-arid conditions of the plains states where -the Choice of money crops ls limited, says the department. Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, Illinois, New Mexico and Texas are the leading broomcorn states.

Under favorable conditions, 600 pounds of brush an acre has been the average, while drier localities or less favorable growing conditions usually limit production to 300 to 300 pounds an acre. For a number of years, the average annual disappearance of broomcorn brush in this country for domestic manufacture and export has been about 50,000 tons. Although population has increased, demand for this product has failed to keep pace. Vac uum cleaners, dust mops, carpet sweepers, push brooms and brushes made from tropical fibers have taken a toll of the broomcorn business in this country. After a feeble but ineffectual effort to stem the tide of liquidation and speculative selling which -again -poured- In on every hand, the stock market broke to new Jow price levels for the year. The tails and utilities bore tMfe brunt of the early selling, but the Industrials were also under pressure, and scores of the best known stocks retreated the farthest distance behind front-line values, In some cases duplicating the lowest prices recorded since 1926. The market was called upon In the early afternoon to withstand one of the heaviest waves that have passed over it In the last two months. Standard Oil of New Jersey dropped abruptly from 50 to 49 in a single sale of a block of 2.500 shares. This drop weakened the oil stocks as a group.
