MARYVILLE Congressman John Shimkus has announced his nominations to the military service academies for the class of 2018, including three area residents. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, N.Y. Area residents nominated by Shimkus are Dakota Couch of Humboldt, Naval Academy; Nicco Stepina of Casey, Naval Academy and Matthew White of Shelbyville, West Academy. High school juniors, college students, or current members of the military who are residents of the 15th District and wish to attend a military acad- emy beginning in 2015 can request a nomination packet by writing Congressman John Shimkus at 15 Professional Park Drive, Maryville, IL 62062.

Those packets with complete requirements will be sent out in late summer. Potential nominees complete applications with both the office and each individual academy. Bon- Ton Stores which includes stores, has announced its Community Days events will be held Feb. 28 and March 1 to benefit local nonprofit groups and the American Heart Association. Nonprofit groups may sign up at www.community- dayevent.com to sell Community Days savings booklets in their neighborhoods and online to raise funds.

Eligible Community Days organizations include 501C-3 nonprofit groups and schools. Nonprofit groups sell booklets for a $5 donation to support their group. The group keeps 100 percent of the $5 donation. When a group registers to sell the books online, they will receive an online selling link that can be used to email supporters, friends and family. This link can also be used via social media.

Through March 1, customers may buy a $5 booklet in stores or at bonton.com and designate their donation to participating groups or the Heart Association. In return, the purchaser receives the booklet of offers, which pays the donor back with a $10 off coupon.
