RALPH DALZELL Author of Books on Home Building and Repair The homeowner can greatly reduce objectionable noises which readily pass from room, to room through cracks around most loosely lit doors by means of or rubber strips. Picture shows a typical Interior door.

Noise passes the cracks between the stiles and casings, as indicated at and between door bottoms and floors at shown et A. Picture illustrates how the door meets the stop of the door opening. Doors vary some times from the picture, but in all cases have a stop --as indicated. Felt jr. rubber strips, in widths equal to the thickness of the stops, can bs tacked or cemented to the stop.

Their thickness depends upon the distance between the door and the stop. Indentlcal strips may be Installed on the stop at the top of the opening. Should a door have only sufficient space between and in picture X- to satisfy just the thickness of the door, the strike plate may be moved a little to provide room for the strip. The strike plate is located on the vertical jamb opposite the door knob. A metal-backed felt strip, generally availablerat hardware stores, can be installed in the bottom ol the door as shown in picture Y.

A lumber yard will cut the required recess in the bottom of the" dopiv The strip pushes down against the when the door is closed, and helps materially to cut sound passage. When the door opens, the strip rises. Loosely 'fitted windows; where FLOOR cracks around the sash are large, allow considerable noise to enter from the of the house. Wcatherstripping will reduce this noise. Many varieties of weather- stripping are readily available at hardware stores, and some may be installed with hammer and tacks.

Noise originating in a room travels to all walls and ceiling in the form of sound waves. When the sound waves hit hard surfaces, such as plaster and concrete, they are reflected or bounced and the sound seems to increase. To avoid this bouncing and to reduce noise, soft materials in the form of acoustical insulation and tile can be applied to the plaster and concrete. A variety of acoustical tiles are made for application to ceilings, and handsome planks and blocks are available for walls. Rubber and cork tile on floors further reduce sound "bouncing." Draperies, curtains, cloth-covered furniture, rugs and carpets also absorrf sound waves.

IT PAYS How to Live Better For Less Money Running a home Is a business, and the family that is business-like about its finances can reduce penses and actually live better for less money, says the Construction Research Bureau, national clearing house for building information. Just as a business must be run at a profit in order to stay out of the red, so a family must have a.

practical, flexible, financial plan to get the most out of life, and have the things they really want, plus an extra reserve of savings. Others do it, why don't you? Start making your money go further by doing as any profitable business does. Estimate your gross income, expenses and net profits, then plan on how use the profit to best advantage. It's as simple as that. First, make a cash forecast on a ruled sheet of accounting paper, marked off into a section for each month of the year.

Divide each month's column into three narrower columns," headed "last year," "estimate for current year" and "actual." This forecast will tell you how much the family's net worth will increase this year. A family's net financial worth is the value of its holdings, such as savings, stocks, bonds, real estate, etc. minus debts, and this should increase slowly and surely from year to year. Your Flow of Cash. The first figure you enter on your cash forecast is "cash on hand and in checking account, end of previous 'period." Write the amount as of the end of the month a year ago.

Just below it write your net take- home pay, and any other income 'the family has. Add it up under "total cash available during period." Next, list your payments for the isame period, including such regular payments as mortgage life and fire insurance premiums, auto, liability insurance, real estate taxes, loan payments; savings deposits, etc. Follow by a list of such variable payments as 'utilities, doctor bills and "other," 1 enter "non-recurring large payments" such as vacation bills and Christmas gifts. Then subtract your total payments ifrom your total available cash to' get "cash balance end of period." This figure should be the same as your, cash plus checking account In the second column write the estimates for the same period this year, leaving the third column blank until the end of the month when you enter the.actual figures. This should show you how much 'cash you wllfhave on hand at the beginning and end of each month.

The average of the figures for last iyear and this year's estimates is your average working capital. This should not be less than $100. Your Net Worth Forecast.
