Tom won Sunday's Pocono 500 Penske can't find enough 'glowing adjectives to describe the former Seattle school teacher's effort in bringing the team its first checkered flag here since Donohue won the inaugural pocono 500 in 1971. "They said our team was going downhill the last number of years," said Penske. "Tom has stopped that criticism. He falls into Mark's shoes and knows how to set up a car. When you push a fence on Friday, as he did at' Indianapolis, and come back to make two chassis changes that give you second place at Indy, that's a great hurdle to conquer." Sneva finished 1.7 seconds ahead of teammate Mario Andretti in Sunday's 200 lap race, taking final command on the 162nd lap to win his first major USAC race.

Sneva previously won the Texas 200. this year. Another set of teammates took the next two positions as Gordon JohncockN fully recovered from a neclNand shoulder injury suffered in the Rex May race at Milwaukee three weeks ago, finished third and Patrick stablemate Wally Dallenbach came in fourth. Both were a Ian behind Sneva and Andretti. Johnny Rutherford was fifth, four laps behind the winner.

Sneva won the race when Andretti misjudged the point of his pit stop at lap 161 and skidded several yards past the area. Rather than face the loss of a lap if his crew had pushed him back Andretti continued another lap before stopping and that error cost him the race. "I think his brakes may have been a bit spongy," Sneva said. "I had similar problems several times when they locked and it was difficult to stop. "We had a lap on'everybody and then on a quick yellow, Mario got by me we knew we had to go all out for it." Instead it will be one of the quarter-finals of the $150,000 women's singles in which four Americans will be bidding for a semifinal place. In the other matches, Rosie a Casals takes on Virginia Qade of Britain for the right to meet the Eyert-King winner while in the other" half of the draw, Martina Navratilova, the Czech, exile now based in Texas, faces Betty Stove of Holland and Briton Sue Barker meets Kerry Reid of Australia. The form book shows the topseeded Evert should beat King, but that's a book which goes out the window when Billie Jean steps onto Wimbledon's hallowed center court where, she has won 19 titles in 16 years. "I love playing on center court. It's like I a different player," said King.

Evert was under no illusions "I reckon on beating Billie Jean most times we meet now but here on ceter court it's really King will be trying for her seventh singles title and 20th overall at Wimbledon, which would establish a record.
