"I like to think of myself as a man of the times," Kennedy once said. Walter Kennedy, who overcame a childhood bout with polio and rose to a 12-year reign over a tempestuous era in National Basketball Association history, died Sufljday night of cancer.

He was a A spokeswoman at St. Joseph's Hospital said Kennedy died peacefully with his family at his bedside. The cause of death was liver failure and complications related to can cer. He underwent surgery a year ago for a melanoma of the back and had been receiving immunotherapy. Kennedy was NBA president from 1963 to 1975, an era marked by escalating player salaries, rapid expansion and a bitter war with the American Basketball Association which the personable Kennedy moved up in the administrative side of athletics.

He was manager of the Stamford High School basketball team, covered sports for the South Bend Tribune during his student days at Notre Dame University, broadcast college and professional games and traveled around the world as public relations representative for the Harlem Globetrotters. I n's nrst political venture, Kennedy was elected mayor of margin and was re-elected In 1961. He served as campaign manager in a successful election bid by Sen. Abraham Ribicoff, in 1962. Those who worked with him characterized him as a hard- working, compassionate leader who helped turn the NBA into a success-; Eddie Gottlieb, one of the founders of the NBA and a close friend of Kennedy's, called his death a terrible loss to basketball.
